Tripura is a small hilly state of India located in the north-eastern region. The total geographical area of Tripura is 10,491 sq. km. Its north–south extension is about 184 km and east–west extension is about 113 km. According to historians, the name Tripura originated from King Tripura of the Chandra Dynasty.

 

The capital of Tripura is Agartala. The average height of the state from sea level is about 1280 meters. Tripura lies between 22°56′ N to 24°32′ N latitude and 91°10′ E to 92°22′ E longitude. The Tropic of Cancer (23°30′ N) passes through the state.

 

Tripura is surrounded by Bangladesh on three sides (north, west and south) with an international boundary of about 839 km. In the east, Tripura is connected with Assam (53 km) and Mizoram (109 km).

 

Physiographic Divisions

 

Tripura is divided into three physiographic regions:

 

1. Hilly Region – Five major hill ranges: Baramura-Deotamura, Atharamura, Longtharai, Sakhantang and Jampui. Hence Tripura is called the “Land of Five Hills.”

·          Highest peak: Betlingshib (939 m)

 

2. Undulating Highland and Valleys – Flat-topped uplands called Tilla and narrow valleys called Lunga.

 

3. Alluvial Plain Region – Found mainly in the north, south-west and south. Rivers like Gomati, Haora, Khowai and Feni flow through these plains.
